Day 1 Introduction

Day 1

The beginning of a new semester and the first class of the new year is type design. Our new teacher Dorian explains that we will be starting from the ground up; re-covering the basics of typography. We also discussed famous designers such as Paul Rand and David Carson. Then as a class we began talking about the open canvas and our impact as a designer, how can we use negative space and place type in a visually appealing structure.

Good/Bad type placement affects many other areas of a designer's work. The placement of a single word can affect not only the readability, but the overall strength of the piece.

Simple question, if you have a simple line of text (Simple Placement ##), where do you place it on the canvas and why? These studies will provide an entry point for our interrogation of typography.

My answer:
It depends on what the text says, but as a personal preference i like to put it center or bottom right corner of the page.

Homework for next Class
Focus on the nuances of relationships between elements and their relationships to the canvas. How can you make meaningful or at least resolved compositions using such limited means? Studies are to be ready for critique Thursday.

3/18/2012 looking back: the first few days of Type II seemed easy, I thought I was ahead of the curve.
I now look back and realize that I was way over confidante.)
